The Disqus Blog: Upgraded! Interface and Performance

  • MediaMisfit · 9 months ago
    These upgrades though small are awesome. I like the fact that you did away with the arrows. I remember when I first saw DISQUS I wasn't sure what they meant.

    Next try getting rid of the avatar popups so that I don't have to constantly watch where I'm putting my mouse. ;-)
  • Daniel Ha · 9 months ago
    We'll have a new update that addresses this pretty soon.
  • Joe · 9 months ago
    Thanks for the update guys. I am going to install it now.

    way to go on the performance upgrade guys! very cool. For us JS/HTML hackers out there, any interesting lessons learned in what's slow/what's fast?
  • Daniel Ha · 9 months ago
    Yes definitely. It may serve as a good blog post sometime in the near future. Thanks for the idea.
  • Rahul Sood · 8 months ago
    Very impressive changes Daniel, your team is incredible. Disqus makes Blogger usable, and the Facebook integration seems to be more solid. Great work guys!!
  • Shane Sponagle · 9 months ago
    Does this new version change anything in the API?
  • Daniel Ha · 9 months ago
    All existing API methods are still live. How come?
  • Shane Sponagle · 9 months ago
    I just asked because I am working on a plugin to use Disqus via the API to use with modx cms and was wondering if anything had changed with this new release.
  • Alex · 9 months ago
    How, if at all, does this affect the XD receiver fix?
  • Ali Kuru · 9 months ago
    I was using the workaround offered here at Disqus blog before I updated my WordPress plugin, unfortunately it doesn't seem to work for me any more. Still causing the same statistics mess.

    I've checked the plugin and I think I've found what is wrong with it;

    Disqus plugin tells Facebook Connect to look for the xd_receiver.htm at the Disqus plugin directory with the variable facebookXdReceiverPath. Problem is, Disqus plugin doesn’t ship with the xd_receiver.htm, and that’s why Facebook Connect’s attempts to reach this file are returning with errors, and causing statistics mess.

    So, I've moved my prevously uploaded "xd_receiver.html" to the Disqus plugin directory (to /wp-content/plugins/disqus-comment-system), and renamed it to "xd_receiver.htm" and problem solved.

    Now it's working flawlessly.
  • Daniel Ha · 9 months ago
    Thanks Ali. We'll make sure that the plugin is packaged correctly with the xd_receiver.
  • Ali Kuru · 9 months ago
    You're welcome, glad it helped.
  • Vladas Palubinskas · 9 months ago
    Thanks a lot! The one question for usability: why the word Report remains after my voting? Like • Report could turn into You liked this • 4 people liked, too.
  • Daniel Ha · 9 months ago
    The Report option isn't an exact counter to Like. If someone likes a comment, the option to raise awareness to the moderator (for any reason) should remain.

    I do understand that some of that may seem counter-intuitive, and I'll pay attention to how people use this.
  • Vladas Palubinskas · 9 months ago
    I mean for me only – and for every user after voting by himself only. Others would still Report, of course.

    The same under my comment – what the reason to Report own response?

  • Corvida Raven · 9 months ago
    Nice work guys! I'm getting ready to give the update a go now on SheGeeks.net.

    Definitely loving the speed update. With so many plugins running on my site now, performance is becoming a growing priority.
  • NewMoonMovie.org · 9 months ago
    Fantastic update you guys! I can tell the difference in speed immediately and substantially on Firefox Mac / Wordpress 2.7.1. The layout and interface is a big improvement--I have literally never seen up/down arrows used on my site so hopefully "Liking" catches on.

    I really hope the "Use Media" dropdown starts adding things other options such as embedded images, YouTube videos, Polldaddy polls, etc--that would make things just about perfect.

    Please take a look at my site (after you log off the Discus).
    http://benatlas.com/2009/03/the-five-question-i...
    On my theme's dark background the new sign on text labels are in invisible

    I tried to add this to my CCS file
    #dsq-content #dsq-label {
    color:#999;
    }

    #dsq-content #dsq-form-text-label {
    color:#999;
    }

    It didn't change the text

    Please advice?

    Does anyone know whether or not the Wordpress automatic plugin update notification feature is working or not? I am running WP 2.7.1, and it is not notifying me that a new Disqus plugin is available. I really do not want to manually uninstall and reinstall.

  • Joe · 9 months ago
    It's not working, you need to download it from wordpress.org and then install. I think WP is thinking that version 2.04 is really version 2.4 and is thinking it's bigger than the new (correct) version of 2.1
  • rpcutts · 9 months ago
    It's not showing up automatically for me either.
    I'm going to give it a day or so to see if it wakes up before I upgrade manually.
  • rpcutts · 9 months ago
    OK I cheated. I went on Edit Plugin and changed the

    $dsq_version = '2.04-3996';

    to

    $dsq_version = '2.0';

    Then went back to the plugins page and it asked if I wanted to upgrade. All seemed to work fine.
  • Jason · 9 months ago
    Thanks for the report. It seems strange that changing this variable would affect the upgrade as this is only used by our plugin. The plugin version that WordPress grabs is from the comments in the top of the file and the readme.
  • rpcutts · 9 months ago
    mela, I'm a fool.
    I did both. I went nuts.

    I changed the line in the comments also.
    Version: 2.04-blah

    Apologies for earlier lies.
  • Joe Ascanio · 9 months ago
    Wow, thanks all for the responses. I posted the same comment on Wordpress.org and got back diddly-squat.

    RPCUTTS, I am going to try your fix. I'll let everyone know how it goes!

    EDIT TO THIS COMMENT!!!
    I just did it...thank you! It worked. You guys rock.

    Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner ‘s plan which proposes a sweeping expansion of federal authority over our financial system, breaks from an era in which the government stood back from financial markets and allowed participants to decide how much risk to take in the pursuit of profit.
    What does all this mean and have we come to the point where socialism is the answer to our problems as well as the worlds’ economic situation.
    The time has come for all good men to come to the aid of their country to prevent the takeover of socialism.

    I am currently integrating the latest Disqus into our WordPress blog v2.7.1

    During testing on IE6 and IE7, we found that IE will prompt an "operation aborted" alert for an unreached URL whenever there is a Disqus popup:
    "Use your existing commenter profile",
    "Thanks for posting!" or
    "Comment awaiting approval by a moderator"

    This happens in Disqus official blog here.
    http://picasaweb.google.com.hk/vickyvickyng/Bug...

    After click OK for the alert, it will redirect to an unreached site.
    http://picasaweb.google.com.hk/vickyvickyng/Bug...

    Is there any solution or patch for that ?
