I hope to see formatting, but also the ability to attach an image as a thumbnail link in the comment. Would be good for some situations

Personally i don't really think that all the options listed by Berin are really necessary for a commenting system, but then again -- the more options, the better...! ;)

My selection would probably focus on the following:

• Hyperlinks
• Bold
• Italics
• Quotation

Everything else would be a nice additon, but doesn't really strike me as necessary...

(Except for the emoticons, maybe...!? ;)))

Type your comment herThanks for the quick reply, Daniel! In principle, I’d like to see the essential functions of WYSIWYG available in Wordpress. In rough order of priority, I think those would be the following:
• Hyperlinks
• Bold
• Italics
• Quotation paragraph (for blog quotes)
• Indent paragraph
• Bullets
• Numbered paragraphs (like bullets)
• Strike-through text (less necessary)
• Color text (less necessary)
• The ability to embed images or videos (less necessary)

I think all of these involve fairly simple HTML. Together, these capabilities would give commenters the ability to write substantial pieces that would stand on equal footing with the blog entry itself. Again, for group blogs such as ours, this is especially important, as it means one's fellow bloggers will be more likely to respond to one's post as a comment instead of writing a totally separate post.

Thanks, Daniel. I can appreciate that you might think that most Disqus users would want Disqus to look clean and inobtrusive on their blogs. But there are a lot of other users who would really like to have at least a basic WYSIWYG. So why not allow the best of both worlds by allowing bloggers (or, even better, individual users) to turn on the WYSIWYG functionality even if it's not on by default?

The problem we're having is that, without WYSIWYG, it's hard to get my fellow bloggers on our group blog to write substantive comments on blogs. For the most part, they just write new entries if they want to say a lot in response to another blog entry--which defeats the whole point of thinking of each blog entry as merely the beginning of a discussion thread.

My point is: the lack of WYSIWYG isn't just about being able to create pretty hypertext. It's having a really negative substantive impact on the way our group blog works.

I'd encourage you to add it ASAP.

I'll add my voice to this request as I think it would really encourage more people to comment. :-)
I think WYSIWYG is a great idea and I also said it in other thread that if needed (and I really need), I can help translate Disqus to Portuguese. :-D
Oh, and emoticons too, pu-lease. ;-)

Anyways, I think Disqus ROCKS and you guys are doing a top notch job. :-)

Unfortunately not. I'll look into this tomorrow. It's mostly a design decision and we'll see if it makes sense for most people as an option.

Hooray! I like that one as well. It encourages more people to leave comments, specially here in ASEAN ;) You know, most ASEAN's love to design their posts :p

It would really be great to have a few more options...

I have noticed that the comment field seems to accept HTML tags so that one actually can do some formatting...but it's not like every blog reader would know how that or is able to use HTML anyway...! But maybe for starters just a short info about the possibility to use HTML would be helpful...even though some WYSIWYG option (as in the TinyMCE Comments plugin) would be even cooler...

Anyway, looking forward to whatever happens next with Disqus...! :)

Actually I was more hoping to get support on the issue of formatting on here, since localization is being discussed (or rather disqussed ;) in other threads already -- but whatever...! :)

Actually it just shows how much people want localization, I guess...!? Still hoping for some feedback on the formatting though...

It is a great idea, and if the translations is to difficulty let the community help out, I am more then willing to do the translation into Danish ;D
