The Disqus Blog: Notify me of followup comments via e-mail

  • Daniel Ha · 2 years ago
Notifications can be enabled in your <a href="http://disqus.com/
    settings">settings.
  • aidanf · 2 years ago
    Hi Daniel,

I saw the notifications option. But I'd like the ability for anonymous commenters or commenters that don't have a disqus account to receive notificaton when a new comment is posted. It's a very common feature in blog comments and it encourages discussion because it keeps pulling commenters back to the discussion.

Also your comment above appears to be clipped at "..in your ." but the full comment came through in the email I received about it. i.e. "..in your settings."
  • Daniel Ha · 2 years ago
    Hi aidanf,

I agree with you. We're working on that as well. Anonymous commenters will have option to receive notifications. Also, thanks for pointing out the clipping issue.
  • altergrin · 1 year ago
    And when will it happen?
  • Alberto · 1 year ago
It's a "must have" feature, will be waiting for it!
  • Sid Savara · 10 months ago
    Hi Daniel,

Would like to throw in another +1 for this feature. It's something that I assume must have been on the backburner for a long time, and I don't want it to get lost in the shuffle.

To reiterate the feature is this:
Any user, DISQUS account or not, should be presented with a checkbox (that is checked by default) that says "Notify me of comments via email."

If checked, that person (whether they have a DISQUS account or not) should receive email notifications if anybody posts any comment on that particular page.
This email should have a link to unsubscribe to the comments.
User should be able to reply directly to the email to create a new comment on the blog (using whatever credentials had been entered for the first comment - either name/email/site if anonymous, or full disqus site if they have registered)

Just wanted to clarify since I think other people in this thread have not been precise.

I placed details of my personal experience of financial CRISIS. How God helped me through this experience. Many years ago I was trained in Bible College in Glasgow. I was full time evangelist in ireland also London with my wife and family. Following up up my experience posted on line, I wish to share what is happening today. Every Sunday for the last 20 yrs. I have had the privilege of speaking at Hyde Park Corner (Speakers Corner) every Sunday 2pm till 6pm despite all that happened to me re financial Crisis I was able to keep proclaiming Jesus Christ every Sunday seeing People touch By God the Holy Spirit. In all our difficulties and problems I wish to encourage people not to give up witnessing for Jesus.

+1 for this request. I like Disqus but can't switch until this feature is there.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
This feature is available and can be enabled here.
  • Marc Seeger · 1 year ago
    NOT the requested feature...

    The request was:
"I'd like the ability for anonymous commenters or commenters that don't have a disqus account to receive notificaton when a new comment is posted."

    Disqus does:
Email you IF you've already got a disqus account

8 months have passed, any news on the feature request?
  • robertmerrill · 1 year ago
Please implement this feature as-explained for anonymous/non-members getting notified for new comments to posts they have already commented on.

Please allow option to either (default) have notifications for ANY comments on a post they already commented on or, if chosen, to receive a notice only if someone is replying right to their own comment.

This should be enabled simply with a check box under the disqus comment box: "Notify me of followup comments via e-mail"

The upside for Disqus is that you can easily include links in those notification emails that will enable people to not only see the comments that have been made, but reply to the comments, and then also REGISTER a disqus account. This has GOT to be a good way to convert many of the "drive by" users you get that never again come back to disqus, even though we (blog authors) spend a lot of time implementing and tweaking your code for you.
  • robertmerrill · 1 year ago
    Daniel,

I am replying directly to your comment here, since I realize you likely don't receive notification of these comments unless people reply directly to your own comment.

So, please see below, my comments to Marc and this whole thread:
    http://disqus.disqus.com/notify_me_of_followup_...

    Please implement. S.O.O.N.

Having such a feature would build readership, which is good. I'm surprised a plugin does not exist that will do this. If I find something, I'll be sure to post.

  • Rob Loach · 1 year ago
Why are people still requesting this feature? It has been a part of Disqus for a long time..... http://disqus.com/settings/notifications/
  • aidanf · 1 year ago
No, the notifications option is different to the feature I was requesting. See my comment above. The notifications option is only available to people with a disqus account. The standard wordpress comment notification will email everyone who commented (if they selected that option when posting the comment ) on a post when a new comment is posted.

"I saw the notifications option. But I'd like the ability for anonymous commenters or commenters that don't have a disqus account to receive notificaton when a new comment is posted. It's a very common feature in blog comments and it encourages discussion because it keeps pulling commenters back to the discussion."

Having a notification would be great for non-members. Most people aren't going to want to signup for an account just for that option and really they shouldn't have to IMO.

  • Lobo7922 · 1 year ago
The readers at my blog are lazy, they like to comment, but ask them to start an account at Disqus is like too much, that's why the option for anonymous users is requested, thanks :)
  • Mike Chelen · 1 year ago
As a temporary fix, perhaps sites can hack together Disqus comment feed with an RSS email subscribe site?

Notice that Disqus includes a link to a comment feed, such as http://disqus.disqus.com/notify_me_of_followup_...
Combine that URL with a site like Feedblitz and you have a public subscribe-by-email link: http://www.feedblitz.com/f/f.fbz?Track=http://d...

It's not clear how difficult that link would be to generate from a blog platform, it seems likely that it could be done with the Disqus API but I don't know if there is an easier way.

Feedburner also offers a similar feature, but it would be a pain to manually enter each comment feed.
  • stock market · 1 year ago
I agree, I think that's a good idea! People could get to know each other via topic categories.
  • Ewan · 1 year ago
    Any more news on this?
  • Dezeray · 1 year ago
Usually this option is useless as if people don't want to register they more likely won't even press the notification button as well . But oh well as they say every single person counts even if it will bring only few back , why not ... This option is usually available in blogs , so i don't know whats there to invent ;) ( I might be wrong tho , but still i saw many blogs with this option)

Having the notification option can bring new readers and memebers to a blog, I think this is a great tool if new comments create a good discussion and this discussion can only be generated with good posts.

So basically the RSS + Feedblitz trick is "manual". Is there a way to automatically include something similar to your new posts?

  • Vishwas Krishna · 12 months ago
Yes, this is something which you definitely need to have. Hope you implement it soon. As of now, one has to rely on the rss threads, which is once again is something not many would do.

Chiming in here - I tried IntenseDebate, and would've kept that platform, but we had syncing issues. But at least IntenseDebate had the ability for commentors to subscribe to comments via email. so many people in this thread think we are asking for "email notification" when someone comments on OUR blog, or to reply via email to make a comment on our OWN blog.

No - we are wanting the PEOPLE who LEAVE A COMMENT to have the option to get EMAIL everytime somebody else posts a comment on that same blog.

    Dear Disqus,

I am preparing to cancel Disqus from my blog because you lack the very basic email option for notification of comments left by people who are not registered with Disqus.

Most Wordpress blogs have this feature and I don't see why you do not. Is this a strategic reason? (To make people join Disqus)

If it is a strategic reason, that is fine, but let me know so I can go back to using WordPress comment system that allows follow up emails for unregistered users.

Great system otherwise (though you do let through a lot of spam lately)

    Tom
