This was quite surprising to hear today. The one thing that jumped out at me right off the bat, was that ID, I'm assuming, will no longer be an open platform (in that it will no longer be available to non wordpress blogs). Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is a plus for disqus, if this is indeed the case. =P

ID has said it will remain open and cross-platform in practically all it's releases on the topic.

The major benefit for them is direct access to askismet, gravatar and exposure to the entire wordpress community.

As I read the IntenseDebate/Automattic news I couldn't stop thinking about how this would affect you guys. The competition between 3rd party commenting services is a great thing. It means that all parties have to work their asses off to innovate, fix bugs, and LISTEN to the community. All three of which you guys are doing a great job of.

It will be important for all of these services to continually find ways to reach new audiences. Gary Vaynerchuck talked about building a personal brand at Web2.0expo in NYC and he said, "don't decide which services to use, use ALL of them". That is exactly the attitude I think you guys need to have. You have email down, I love how easy it is to contribute to a comment thread via email but what about if I want to use Friendfeed or FB or [ other service here ]? And that is just limiting the scope to text responses.

The Seesmic integration early was an awesome innovation. Now what about Jott? If I don't have access to my laptop but want to contribute to a text conversation how do I do it? What if I could vocally call in my comment or response? The web is increasingly MOBILE and increasingly LIVE. Keep those themes in mind and you'll be headed in the right direction.

And besides, I highly doubt existing Disqus-powered Wordpress blogs and sites will move to IntenseDebate even if Wordpress forces them to. Maybe < 1% will do, but still, I doubt it. IMO, there is no competition between the two.

What is important here is "CHOICE". What Automattic did is simply to buy a comment-defragmentation service than to build their own. There is just no point creating one from scratch if you can buy out there.

I'm not a Wordpress and Akismet user, but even if I am, I will still stick with Disqus. And even if I am a new blogger using Wordpress with ID, I'll still choose Disqus. I'm serious :p

I just started using Disqus on my blog at http://ericlee.us. Now, I did sign up for the ID private beta (full disclosure), but I did so in order to compare your service to theirs. I want to see which one I like the best. I really, really enjoy using Disqus and I don't see myself switching right away (if at all).

I think the biggest thing for me is to have users get replies via email without having to sign up. That doesn't seem to be an option. If someone could work that out, that would be dope.

I think a lot of folks are hesitant to sign up for something else, but keep up the good work. Still testing out both on my little blog.

The world and the nation is rapidly going downhill and the Newspapers are notoriously late on recent changes, some missed the Rescue Bill and that headline was "bailout Done" (close to that) when in fact it had been voted down.
The Global effects and interaction are not presented, explained or discussed, they are ignored. This is a big change from the past, when we couldn't care less about what happens "overthere", now we see the impact on what they do and what they do not do, like their recent failure to bailout some major banks, or whatever.
Do consider. With SubCategories, of course.
