ok, so even if they're commenting on someone else's blog - they'll receive email notifications if the thread is updated? or only if someone responds to their particular comment? Again, this would be fore users commenting on my blog, not for me as i already get notifications for comments on my blog.

Readers will only get notified of direct replies. I personally would like to have the option of subscribing to a thread and get email replies for every comment posted on that thread.

yup, me too. and several of my readers have asked for this.. but from what i hear this will be in a future update possibly?

Its been 4 months, Paul. Maybe they're not getting notifications of new comments.... hmmm...
