The Disqus Blog: How do I import comments?

  • moserw · 1 year ago
Hmmm. Any updates on how to import comments into Disqus? I still got comments on my old default WP that have not been integrated into Disqus. I recently changed the theme and all those old comments disappeared. Of course I still see them in my admin panel, but Disqus has replaced all commenting on my blog so the old comments cannot be found anymore on my blog. I am wondering how best to import them under Disqus. This topic aside Disqus Rocks! Keep it up guys.
  • Michael · 1 year ago
Yeah, I'm looking for an update to WP comment import status as well. Maybe if we add a few more posts in this topic we can get Daniel to drop us a bone.
  • Mike Moore · 1 year ago
Daniel Ha, any update on this?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Yes, it will be a part of our next release.
  • Mike Moore · 1 year ago
Excellent. How long until the next release?
  • Michael · 1 year ago
    He probably won't say. He's said many times that they don't like to give ETAs because schedules can slip. So if he doesn't commit, they're never late ^_^;;

But it would be nice to get a ballpark of whether we're looking at days, weeks, or months.
  • Mike Moore · 1 year ago
He _did_ say this would be available in June. I agree a ballpark answer would be nice. Weeks or months?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Weeks.

I did say June but I was wrong. I don't mind being wrong but I don't like to give bad ETAs to people.

It's not awaiting development. It's just part of something bigger now. Hang on tight.
  • daddyjason · 1 year ago
Well see, now we're all excited again!
  • Wayne Horkan · 1 year ago
Hiya, is this nearly done, 'cause I'm just about to replace my comment system with disqus, but I don't want to lose my tasty comments.
  • Jonathan · 1 year ago
It won't hurt for me to go ahead and comment-vote for a ballpark estimate. june didn't so much pan out...
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    1) "Replace comments on all posts" leaves the database alone. It just forgets it exists, but your data is intact.

    2) Yes, you can Export comments under Integration Settings.

    3) Still no search, but it's being worked on.

    4) We hear you about importing into Disqus. It's something that is still planned.

    Thanks!
  • randyaa · 1 year ago
    1) excellent I'll start using it now then!

    2) perfect, I assume there are plans for importing these same exported files at some point?

    3) Yep I saw somewhere else that you're working on it, that is very good news as it's definitely something big that's missing.

    4) Awesome! Do you know what sort of format will be allowed or will you be able to magically import directly from your blog (wordpress for example) ?

I'm very new here but I'm already very impressed with both the level of responsiveness as well as the system itself.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Great!
  • daddyjason · 1 year ago
Pop Critics is definitely thinking of working Disqus into our new site design so we're incredibly happy to hear that the Wordpress import feature seems imminent. We too have a LOT of comments that we want to be able to bring into the new design. So far everything we've seen from Disqus has been impressive.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
I'm curious why this reply is above the one below, which is from 3 weeks ago?

    How does that work?
  • daddyjason · 1 year ago
I was wondering the same thing.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
There are various sort options for Disqus. It's likely that the score
on the post is higher than the one below.
  • Chris Lentz · 1 year ago
Any idea when we might see this functionality come to Disqus? I use wordpress, and I gave up about 100 comments on my blog when I switched to Disqus. I would love to get them imported into the new system.
  • Sherman · 1 year ago
    Great Service! Thanks!

My question is related: Does anyone know how to export comments from a TypePad blog for import into Disqus?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
You can export from Disqus by going to http://disqus.com/migrate

At the moment, importing into Disqus is not fully supported. Once we sort
out the kinks, we'll update you. Thanks!
  • Sherman · 1 year ago
Awesome. I have, like, 6000 typepad blogs, so if you need someone to test or anything you know where to find me.
  • parksobong · 1 year ago
The import feature (directly from the Wordpress admin interface) was one of the selling points of Intense Debate, but I still decided on Disqus with the hope of seeing this feature soon!
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
It will most definitely show up soon. Cheers!
  • felix · 1 year ago
I'd just like to throw my wish in for importing from wordpress. :)
  • Stewart Marshall · 1 year ago
Importing would be great - I use Movable Type and despite being only a lowly level of geekish, managed to set up Disqus wihout any problems - great job on making that easy!

I don't have a huge number of comments but it sure would be nice to import them to disqus - so I would like to add my encouragement to add this feature!
  • haraldf · 1 year ago
So do I! Movable Type 3.35 in my case. Thanks ...
  • Kate Foy · 1 year ago
I'm a WordPress self-hosted blogger and like a lot of others here, I await the arrival of an import comments function into Disqus. Until then I keep my plug-in deactivated. I care too much about the comments I have to 'lose' them.

Great that Seesmic was integrated yesterday. I switched everything back on this morning hoping you'd provided the import functionality as well. Nope. Deactivated again.

Any idea when it's coming ... ETA or something? Love the Disqus concept and look BTW!
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Hi Dramagirl,

We don't have a definite ETA, but it's a priority. We're looking at June.
  • Jonathan · 1 year ago
oh god oh god oh god i can't wait to be able to import from Wordpress. it's june... any further news on ETA?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    June has 30 days. :)

    Further news: it's coming along.
  • Jonathan · 1 year ago
I read another blog post (or maybe a comment) recently that maintained that using Disqus might diminish the SEO-friendliness of your UGC, since the comments are hosted somewhere else and will not add "freshness" to a post that improve its page rank.

I'll hopefully be using Disqus with Wordpress once the import functionality gets developed. Is the above assertion true or false?
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
<chuckles> 6 days of those 30 left - we still looking at June or will it slip to July?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We don't like giving ETAs because they slip. It's being worked on, but not solely. There are priorities ahead of this feature and I do appreciate the patience.
  • gluca · 1 year ago
I'm a Haloscan user (please don't laugh :), it can export in xml format.
    let us know! :)

  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Yes.
  • nasirjumani · 1 year ago
Thanks for answering....waiting for the update! :)

I'm really impressed with this tool. It took me less than half an hour to get this integrated into a Drupal blog using Rob Loach's module. A mechanism to import comments into Disqus would be very handy, though.

I'm backing up Disqus comments using the RSS feed, which is a tip I picked up from someone else, but I'm not too worried about migration paths, as this looks like a really great service. (Gravatar must be a bit worried, though.)
  • himerus · 1 year ago
I've got to say, I've been seeing this a lot lately on the sites I frequent, and have seen the Drupal module often, so I thought I'd give it a quick shot, but without a way to import current comments into Disqus, this is completely useless.

It might be a great recommendation for clients with new sites going up, but personally I hit "uninstall" until something a little more thought out is in place for importing comments.
  • Queer Republic Tees · 1 year ago
Since there have no comments here in 4 months, I'm hoping this has been resolved? If so, can somebody point me to the most current thread so I can figure out how to import my old comments? Thanks
  • goji noni · 11 months ago
hey dude..thanks for da great service
Does anyone know how to export comments from a TypePad blog for import into Disqus?
  • zerok · 11 months ago
From what I can see so far, this whole import/export procedure is application independent, so you'll need someone to write a convertor from software XYZ to Disqus and the other way around. The methods provided by the API seem to be powerful enough to be used for that (using for example get_thread_by_identifier and create_post).
  • mully · 11 months ago
I created a small Ruby web application via the Sinatra framework to import our comments into Disqus using only RSS feeds. I blogged about it here:

    http://locomotivation.com/blog/2008/12/01/disqu...

You will need Ruby installed on your local machine in addition to the gems mentioned in the post for this to work, but it did work for a couple of blogs that we imported over.
  • zeitcam · 10 months ago
I love Disqus - the Facebook Connect feature will be great. I am ready to switch over once Disqus provides a way for me to import my existing posts directly from a CSV file
  • 3dpartyservices · 10 months ago
Also looking for an update. We recently switched over to Disqus but would like to import existing comments from WP.

    Thanks

I am looking for this feature as well. I've been using disqus on my product site for a while now and LOVE IT! Now I would like to add it to my accompanying WP blog, but as many have said, I don't want to lose my current comments. -- is there an update, or is it available and I've just overlooked it?

Appreciate all the hard work that put into this service, it's awesome!
  • jgoode · 9 months ago
I've installed disqus on my wp blog - and from the admin area, the instructions available here do not match the options I see in my admin. I'm using wp 2.7 and I see no advanced options at all. when i click on comments (in admin) all i get is the screen that asks for my forum name -- what i realized was I downloaded the incorrect version of the plugin. If you are having a similar issue, make sure you are using the latest version of the disqus plugin for wp which as of today is Version: 2.03-3166

once i got all this cleared up, everything seems to be fabulous - thank you!

Any news on this feature.... I agree this might not be in your high priority updates, but it certainly matters much, as I get into this question whenever I recommend disqus to fellow bloggers.

If others can utilise your API's to go for a workaround, then why not tweak it better by Disqus themselves to get it as a supported feature.

Eagerly looking forward for response. I switched over already, but have set it only for new posts, fearing to hide the ones which are already there in my older ones.

I would like to import my Disqus comments from intensedebate, how can I complete it now?
  • hypermark · 1 year ago
So just to make sure that I understand. I am a TypePad blogger. I have legacy posts that generate a fair bit of traffic/comments so in a perfect world would apply to all posts but can't risk losing my legacy comments. It's not enough for them to be sitting in a DB invisible to visitors and wait until you have some import function. Do you have a workaround that accomplishes my goals or is best answer to just apply to new posts?

    Thanks in advance.

I cannot wait for the import feature !!!

  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We're working hard on it. :)
  • baratunde aka jack turner · 1 year ago
    glad to hear it.

i just installed disqus at www.jackandjillpolitics.com

we're a pretty big political blog, and i'm excited to see how our folks react to the new system.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Very cool. I noticed that you're not getting the proper comments link on the main page.

    The fix is here: http://disqus.com/help/#faq-17

So.. maybe a Happy July 4th present from the devs? I just added the plugin to my Wordpress blog(s) and love it! http://www.dailyhaggis.com/

I chose the "Only entries with no comments" option until the import feature is enabled. Looking forward to it.

GREAT job on this service, by the way. Much needed.
