The Disqus Blog: Facebook Connect now available on Disqus

  • baratunde · 11 months ago
posting here as well as the forum because it's not clear which place is more appropriate

I've been disappointed by the random and incomplete response from Disqus on a few key FB Connect issues

    1) Will FB connect work with Disqus if you've set your blog to only allow comments from Registered or Email Verified users?

    2) Does Disqus integrate comments posted under a Disqus login and FB Connect login if they are from the same person? We have hundreds of commenters and THOUSANDS of comments people have invested in. I'd like to offer the FB connect convenience, but not at the cost of splitting our users' comments and identity.

    3) do you have PLANS to offer these capabilities?

Both of these questions have been asked repeatedly on this thread at Disqus, and they have noticeably not been answered clearly.

I think Disqus is underestimating the risk blog owners are taking by deploying these new services and not offering clear, transparent answers to essential questions makes me question the commitment of the team to offering a stable, long term community solution. I don't have time to just install the app and see what works, but that's what I'm left with.

Even getting questions answered here is pretty random. There's this forum which offers NO SEARCH and there are comments on the blog posts announcing the new feature. A blog post is not the best way to communicate product features and installation guidelines, and a searchless forum is useless for those of us who don't have time to randomly scroll back in time, hoping someone has asked our question.

So, could someone from disqus please answer the three questions I've asked but also consider a better structure for communicating features, instructions and FAQs around your product.

I feel like you've been around long enough to have solved this, and the chaos involved in answering basic questions makes me nervous continuing with your product.

    thanks, and all the best

So, did you get a reply to the above. I have the same questions.

Facebook updated their page settings and here are instructions to update it.

What about the option of posting the comments I make here, and the article back to Facebook?
  • Luke Hoersten · 12 months ago
    Testing... It works!
  • Seth Long · 12 months ago
Is this not available to sites using the generic code method of integration? My sites show only a "Please login to comment" bar, which clicks through to the Disqus.com login panel.

Looks like it's because you've chosen to only allowed registered (Disqus) commenters to post. We should have more granular control to allow FB within these confines as well.
  • Martin Kelley · 12 months ago
Looks great, thanks for getting this. I've been dubious of the whole Facebook Connect thing but then found myself using it over at Lifehacker even though I had a comment account already going there.

I guess there's no way of linking up the Disqus profiles we have with the new Facebook ones--we'll be showing up differently, right?

when I went to techcrunch it posted to my facebook feed. so something is working... but obviously Michael's application has somethings going that mine doesn't. I get the feeling that setting this up is going to be as hard as disqus was to begin with. {sigh}... and it has been so worth it so far... setting up disqus on blogger was a nightmare. setting up a facebook "application" just for one's own blog is going to be just as hard

I seem to have created multiple facebook applications out of frustration.... might that be the problem?
  • Riaz Kanani · 11 months ago
so how long before we can combine our disqus and facebook acocunts so that whether i comment in facebook or disqus all comments show under one profile?

What would be nicer is the ability to have both on one profile, but privacy options as to who can see which stream.
  • Preston · 11 months ago
I notice you have in this thread comments under both your Disqus profile and your Facebook account. You've even added Facebook as a link in your Disqus profile. But when you comment under the Facebook account, it doesn't link up to the Disqus profile. Anyway to get these to link up?
  • Mike Street · 12 months ago

I've added it to my blog, and the first comment, having selected to comment by FC went well. But now I'm logged in, I'm getting the below pop up when I try and comment again. Any idea why? Wants me to enter a name....screenshot below

  • Greg Gerber · 12 months ago
Wow sO slick. Great job guys. Too bad the connect popup is like 20px too tall. Creates a small scrollbar. That must drive you guys nuts! The [f] in the corner of the thumbnail is a nice touch!
  • Derek van Vliet · 12 months ago
Very cool. A couple of issues/questions though:

    1. Commenting with my facebook account doesn't add the comments to my disqus account. I have added my facebook account to my disqus profile so I would think it would be possible to link the two together.

    2. Will you be posting items to my users' facebook news feeds to tell their friends that they commented on my blog? This would be killer.
  • koichi · 12 months ago
This is great! I'm sure my users will enjoy this!
  • Daniel Ha · 12 months ago

Yep. Me too. and my photo isn't showing up in the widget on the sidebar.

And I have to log in with each new comment.

Also, is there a way to integrate your old Disqus comments with the new Facebook Connect system?

    And ... :) don't you love roll-out
  • Randy · 12 months ago
Let me clarify... on my blog I have to log out and then log back in to add another comment. It just gave me the same error here. I use firefox on a mac machine. I checked my cookies and it says to keep them until they expire.
  • Randy · 12 months ago
Dude, I really need to learn to get all my thoughts out at once. The error message says that http://disqus.com is asking for "Please enter a name to comment" even though I am logged in under facebook.

It does this every time I try to leave a second comment after logging in to Facebook. Another way to say it is... I have had to login to facebook connect three times to leave these three messages.

The Facebook Connect cross-domain receiver URL (http://disqus.com/facebook-connect/xd_receiver....) must have the application's callback url (http://www.disqus.com) as a prefix. You can configure the callback url in the application's settings.

Try logging out of Facebook and then refresh this page. Select Facebook Connect. What happens? When I do it, as soon as I hit the "Connect with Facebook" button, my whole browser window starts shrinking down to nothing, from right to left. I have never seen that before. Ever. Ever ever. Anyone else getting this? Crazy!

Indeed you are correct, sir. I tried it on other Facebook Connect-enable sites, including TechCrunch, and I saw that none of the hundreds of commenters was complaining about the same thing. So: It's a personal issue! I now simply log in to Facebook before logging in to any FB Connect site. In case my problem helps anyone to diagnose their own problems: I am using Firefox with a number of addons (All-in-One Sidebar, TabMix Plus, a dozen or so others...) on a Dell Inspiron 6000. Don't feel like sorting it out, myself. All in all, great feature, Disqus!

I get the feeling that setting this up is going to be as hard as disqus was to begin with. {sigh}... and it has been so worth it so far... setting up disqus on blogger was a nightmare. setting up a facebook "application" just for one's own blog is going to be just as hard

This is a step in the right direction, but how can we link our Facebook Connect comments to our Disqus accounts? For example, I posted a test comment on my own blog using Facebook Connect, now I have two separate identities on Disqus.

so how long before we can combine our disqus and facebook acocunts so that whether i comment in facebook or disqus all comments show under one profile?

What would be nicer is the ability to have both on one profile, but privacy options as to who can see which stream.
  • Preston · 11 months ago
I notice you have in this thread comments under both your Disqus profile and your Facebook account. You've even added Facebook as a link in your Disqus profile. But when you comment under the Facebook account, it doesn't link up to the Disqus profile. Anyway to get these to link up?

Thanks for that update. I updated my post to indicate that.

Since yesterday I've identified two other problems which I outline in sections 5.2 and 5.3 of my post. The first is a "That Wasn't Supposed To Happen" error when trying to post with FBC on three different browsers (picture included in the post). Another problem is that Disqus is sometimes, but not always, not remembring a FBC commenter from one comment to the next, forcing the commenter to re-permission for each comment even if a comment is left on the same blog within seconds of a previous FBC comment.

posting here as well as the forum because it's not clear which place is more appropriate

I recently switched to Disqus specifically for the Facebook Connect functionality. I still don't have it working right. In regards to what I'd like to see for linking accounts. . . I would love it if the Disqus account could be linked to my Facebook account (or vice versa) so that I don't have to log into Disqus to moderate comments and then logout and log into Facebook Connect to respond or post comments.

The issue of having to log out and back in to Facebook every time I have to post a is also a hassle.

Finally, it would be nice if the comments we post actually appear in the news feed. That's really one of the main points of this functionality. . . isn't it?

assured it is coming. Also we have been discussing a better way to
    link your FB & Disqus.

    Thanks for the feedback,

Great so far. Really looking forward to integration with the Feed into Facebook. One other addition re: the Disqus Wordpress Widget--have the Facebook Connect Comments available there as well.
    Thank you.

I'm amazed how responsive this was! Thanks Giannii. I see it worked for you. This is what I did. I clicked the "Connect with Facebook" image. Then, I authenticated successfully. After typing in my comment, I press "Post Comment." This error is then shown: "That wasn't supposed to happen. It's not your fault. We're on the case."

BTW, I tried the FB Connect option on this site and had the same result.

    Any ideas?

When will it feed the Facebook account's newsfeed, like it can be done with fb:comments?
  • Daniel Bigras · 9 months ago
Same here.. I have this problem when I try to reply on my site. I have to logout, and reply then login. If I try to reply when I was already logged in, it gives me this error. Just like now, when I try to reply to you.

The instructions in the imbage above are now out of date. Facebook does not have a 'Callback URL' section to fill in. Instead they have a Canvas Callback URL section on the 'Canvas' settings page.

I have just installed Disqus on my site, and I am finding I can only login to FB Connect if I am already logged into Facebook (in another tab).

If I am logged out of Facebook completely, then click on the FB Connect button, my browser (Firefox) immediately starts to minimise.

    Has anyone had this issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Andrew B. · 12 months ago
Not with this initial release, but we'd like to support that soon.
  • Facebook User · 11 months ago
Would that cause a user's multiple accounts to be merged, or could they still use either?
  • Andrew B. · 11 months ago

  • andrewtj · 11 months ago
I'd like to retain the ability to login with either FB (or OpenID one day?) or disqus credentials to the one disqus account.
  • J. Sperling Reich · 10 months ago

That's really one of the main points of this functionality. . . isn't it?
  • Giannii · 10 months ago
