The Disqus Blog: Export from Disqus back into Wordpress?

  • ErnieAtLYD · 1 year ago
+1. We used disqus briefly on one of my blogs, and the blog readers wanted to switch back to the old commenting system for various reasons & issues.

From a development perspective I can understand why this isn't a high priority, but this would offer a great goodwill and would make me jump back to disqus if the timing and architecture was appropriate for other sites.

    Thanks, Ernie

The current disqus 2.0 plugin for wordpress keeps the Wordpress Database and Disqus synchronized
--> you don't need to so anything and new comments are automatically added to the wordpress Database.

As for the XML format mismatch on "old" disqus comments: I'm sure somebody will write a converter
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Not sure what we're using, but I had no idea you could do that.

So if we install this plugin, it will syncronize everything that's already
been posted on Disqus before this plugin?
  • Marc Seeger · 1 year ago
If you are using a Wordpress Blog and install the plugin, you'll be able to:

    1. Export all of your "old" wordpress comments to disqus
    2. Keep your Wordpress Database in sync with the Disqus System (so you are able to disable disqus and still have all the comments that were posted on disqus)

You will not be able to: get comments that are ONLY on disqus into wordpress

I might not have looked into all the possibilites though
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
There HAS to be a way to sync previous Disqus-only comments into WP...seems
    like it should be automatic.
  • Marc Seeger · 1 year ago
apparently it is :) (according to Gaurav)
  • Gaurav · 1 year ago
I just upgraded my old Disqus to 2.0 and I still don't see my comments on Disqus (prior to 2.0) in my db. Is it a real time sync? If not, how often comments are synced from Disqus to WP db?

Update: They synced up. I guess when I viewed that post.
  • Marc Seeger · 1 year ago
So are old "disqus only" comments synced to the wordpress database?
    That would be really cool
  • Gaurav · 1 year ago
Yes, they did for me :)

By "disqus only" I mean, the comments that were added through my blog to Disqus prior to v 2.0.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Awesome....I wish I could get this 2.0 thing to work now :)

I did the export and only 25 comments were taken into Disqus. The rest are being ignored for some reason and since Disqus took over my comments, they no longer appear. I have to take this one way or the other, so how do I either get the rest into Disqus or get my comments exported from Disqus back into Wordpress?
  • Jason · 1 year ago
Comments are automatically synced back to WordPress from Disqus when
you visit the page. Can you link to some of your posts that should
have comments that currently do not show any with Disqus? I will
check the status from your export.

I ended up with a massive page of text and the last line was a fatal error when I did this export.

Here is a page that SHOULD have comments:

    Hi Mike,

What was the fatal error message? We have a few reports of users unable to export their comments, but we cannot reproduce this one. Thanks.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
I guess I should try it again, but I didn't save it.

Should I try the import again?
  • Jason · 1 year ago
    Sure. I appreciate it.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
    OKAY, here goes...
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
There is about a bazillion lines of text that goes like this:

Then this is the final error code at the bottom:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 103809024 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 28794548 bytes) in /nfs/c02/h06/mnt/43539/domains/popcritics.com/html/wp-content/plugins/disqus/export.php on line 260
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
I guess we have too many comments :(
  • Jason · 1 year ago
Thanks for the output. This is really helpful. I'll work on a fix for it tonight.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Otherwise, I see my latest Disqus comments appearing inside of Wordpress, so that's working!

Hi there. I just tried to use the "Import" function in the new WP Disqus plugin, and here's the error I get:

Warning: set_time_limit() [function.set-time-limit]: Cannot set time limit in safe mode in /mnt/144/sda/8/3/sfadj/wp/wp-content/plugins/disqus-comment-system/export.php on line 5

Any idea how to fix this?

Can you send me an export of your comments and I can manually import
    them for you. http://wiki.disqus.net/ExportWordPressComments

    Hi Giannii

Just so we're clear: what I want to do is export my Disqus comments BACK INTO Wordpress. Can you do that?

    Thanks for your help.
