I have been interacting in the chinese blogging community for years and it is really a big market out there. Quite different from United States. Oh if you are adding a chinese translation, it will be good if you can create a different commenting platform for chinese bloggers. For example, Chinese Characters are written using a special language software installed. If disqus can include Han Yu Ping Ying feature that allows us to easily write comments in chinese characters, it will be greatly appreciated.

This is perfect timing... I was actually sitting at my desk today, thinking, "man, I wonder when disqus will get a Japanese version..." and poof, it's here!

Hi, Jordi tweeted this and well done to him for his efforts. A group of professional translators are having a discussion about crowd-sourced translations over on FriendFeed. I'd be interested in reading your opinions (both Disqus and the volunteer translators).

  • normis · 1 year ago
I don't have a Friendfeed account, so I will reply here - basically there is no way of telling how an "unprofessional" translator will do it, maybe he is just as good translating "post comment" or "log in" as the paid guy - this is a very simple interface in Disqus, it's not a book or complex software. There are not many options for a translator anyway. So why hire anyone? The only thing I could think of - let local language speakers comment on quality of the translations, or cast votes.

P.S.: that Latvian translation is mine :)
  • MatthewBennett · 1 year ago
Hi normis. I agree that they're normally very simple translations, although enough companies seem to get it wrong often enough to make me wonder how they check what's being translated.

Do you think it has anything to do with the perceived value you receive as a user from something like Disqus, FF or Facebook? Or would you consider doing a crowdsourced translation project for Ford or British Airways too?
  • normis · 1 year ago
It all depends on what the company goals are. If they are translating a brochure for business clients, a crowd-sourced translation may (!) not be the best idea, but if they are translating the "push/pull" door signs in their airport lounges - why the hell not? It's easy to validate from a 3rd party. Just as I said, in a public translation project, you can always call for a public spellcheck before releasing it to big masses. It all boils down to the objective, complexity, and amount.
  • Maya · 1 year ago
It may not be pertinent to this discussion but I would like to draw your attention to the new biomedical search engine Vadlo (vadlo.com). Thought you might be interested in a different kind of search engine.

It is better if each comment user able to choose their prefer language. Or registered user choose their prefer language at disqus.com and comment zone which located on each blog site they visited reflect it.

I guess Disqus did hear the noise out there of no commenting system that are able to display their languages. It's really nice for the volunteers to help in the translation. However, It seems like people of the asia countries doesn't seems to be that helpful. Let's see what are the upcoming languages!

Stepping out to making it an international website is a great step ahead!I have friends from other countries that are impressed of what Disqus has but at another point was disappointed that they are unable to use it when english is not their main language. I am glad that Disqus is taking this move!
  • Annie · 10 months ago
Are the comments in that language only or the whole website are in that language? I am anticipating to give it change and check it out!Are we able to change back the languages swiftly?
