The Disqus Blog: Disqus: The Official Blog - Disqus Comments: Set a default avatar for your site

    Nice touch!
  • Robert · 2 months ago
I'd definitely like to see a random avatar generator at least as an option. It's all well and good to want everyone to sign up for Disqus, but the fact of the matter is that if we're going to allow people to comment without signing up, we should at least be able to dress the icons up a bit more than just having a single icon to represent them all.
  • Aaron Brown · 2 months ago
I think I'm gonna give the old avatar a mustache. Awesome.
    Thanks for the new option!
  • Aniruddh D · 2 months ago
Yes that very good option much batter then a black and white image. Here if Disqus allow the admin to give badges to frequent or favorite commentators. like "Champ" Commentator, "Frequent" Commentator, "Favorite" Commentator. it will be a rewards for the commentators for the daily comments they're leaving in diffrent blogs.

For Eg: I'm frequently commenting on Disqus blog so Disqus blog admin can choose my Disqus profile and grant me a badge "Frequent" "Best" and that badge is visible to my disqus profile so others can know from which sites and blog i got diff badges plus this will also visible when someone hover the mouse to my profile in any disqus comments.

Implement this system, by this commentators will encourage to post new comments in different blogs and sites in hope that they will get something good from the side admin. and for site admin this is something good to give for their regular commentators, kind of a rewards to them who create the good discussion by comments and reaction..it's a win win thing for everyone..it's like having a pro status for particular blog.

    love it!

    That'll work :)

So here's yet another network that I'm not sure is necessary. Guess I need to learn its quirks first, advantages. I keep trying to tack on that long tail of the cat and the tail keeps switching. It is one long tail with many appendages.

If you have any questions about our service I'd be more than happy to answer them. You can shoot me a message here: http://disqus.com/help
  • Mark Guim · 2 months ago
Please integrate Wavatars, MonsterID, or identicons. Wordpress has made this as an option with their default commenting. http://is.gd/3Z6DK
  • timendum · 2 months ago
I agree with Mark, please, integrate at least one random avatar generator.
A page with 13 comments and the same avatar 13 times is ugly!
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
That's a good point, I'll see what I can do.
  • Anders Emretsson · 2 months ago
That is a good point. It's confusing to have all my guests look like Richard Nixon.
  • Charles · 2 months ago
Please don't, they are all very ugly.
  • Mark Guim · 2 months ago
true, but random ugly icons on my page look better than one default pic for unregistered users.
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
    Indeed.

    Please see this link:

    http://www.croteaulaw.com/index.php?option=com_...

    http://www.yournewcrib.info/index.php?

the link to this page is http://disqusforjoomla.disqus.com/thread_839/

when I did a test post on My site, it show on the other site's community???

Thanks for sharing this informative post.
  • Jed · 2 months ago
Is it possible to have these show up in the combo box widget, too?
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
Good point. We'll work on that.
  • a. · 2 months ago
Oh, I too would love if the "recent comments" feed would display the default avatar.
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
We're working on fixing that. =)
  • Anders Emretsson · 2 months ago
Sorry for the OT: This is all very good and all, but the one feature I miss in Disqus is a button for links. Can we expect that one anytime soon?
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
    Can you elaborate some?
  • Anders Emretsson · 2 months ago
If I want a link to my site to look like this: emretsson.net, I have to write the html myself. Of course I can just paste http://emretsson.net but with it looks nicer the other way. A link button (with options för target) would encourage more visitors to tidy upp their comments, I think.

Buttons for italic and bold would be good too ... And perhaps a preview? If you have the time ...? :)
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
You're talking about a Wysiwyg? If so we've been talking about that recently. I;ll bring it up again in our next meeting.
  • Anders Emretsson · 2 months ago
Wysiwyg is the word! Thank you!
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
Good feedback. Only issue is that WSYIWYG adds some weight to what is essentially standard support for HTML.

Would it be helpful to have a little "Formatting Guide" link next to the comment box?
  • Anders Emretsson · 2 months ago
    I believe it would.
  • Anders Emretsson · 2 months ago
I do want to emphasize that I love Disqus – wysiwyg or no wysiwyg. Great work!
  • tindo · 2 months ago
    Hmmmmmmmmm.
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
    hmm?
  • Alex · 2 months ago
Disqus twittered 6 times, here's their latest: Did you know you can change the default comments avatar for your site? I'm tired of seeing our default ugly
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
    Can you show me?
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
Nice job with the 'shoping for this post, @Giannii.
  • Brad F. · 2 months ago
I think I see where you're going with this, but wouldn't it be easier and make more sense for a person that has Disqus comments on their site to have a Disqus commenting profile? Then they would be logged in by default and not have to worry about that.
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
Absolutely. The default avatar is for commenters who do not have an account.
  • Atornysmax · 2 months ago
Thanks for sharing this informative post.
  • joerivngton · 2 months ago
    Thanks for the new option!
  • Samiamrp8 · 2 months ago
this is confuseing any one can help me ?????
  • nesterchick21 · 2 months ago
I would rather have a random pattern of icons, instead of one icon all the time for different users but the same icon on each individual.

  • Christopher Clarke · 2 months ago
    No way to use Gravatars?
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
Of course. If nothing is set, Gravatars will always be used if available.
  • Christopher Clarke · 2 months ago
That does seem to be the case on Disqus's moderate pages, and I guess it could be a bug, but the default avatar for some of the comments on my blog remains the default avatar gray face image even though Gravatars do exist for the commenters in question and displayed prior to my re-enabling of Disqus (for awhile I went back to WordPress's built in comments) and display on the moderate page.

A blog page that this is happening on: http://sorrowfulunfounded.com/wp-toc-widget#dis...

Am I missing a setting somewhere?
  • Daniel Ha · 2 months ago
You will need to use the new theme by heading to the customize panel.
  • Christopher Clarke · 2 months ago
I changed to the theme Narcissus (seems to be the new one?), but I'm still getting the default gray image (with the exception of my own avatar, but then I'm a registered user here and have specifically selected to use my Gravatar - but its still serving my older Disqus image for some reason... which is identical). Is worth trying to reimport my comments?
  • Sleep Deprivation · 2 months ago
THATS SICK!!!! finally we can have a different image than a bland black and white face.
  • snipe · 2 months ago
This function seems to be broken. Every time I try to upload, I get to the crop screen, click save, and I get an error page saying something went wrong. :(
  • Giannii · 2 months ago
What browser and os are you using?
  • snipe · 2 months ago
Hi Giannii - I'm on a Mac (Snow Leopard), and have tried this using Firefox 3.5.3, Flock 2.5.2 and Safari 4.0.3. Each time, I get to the crop screen, click Save Changes, and I come to a page that says:

"Sorry, an error occurred on our end.
We've been notified of the issue and are on the case."
  • Sven Kortekaas · 1 month ago
Damn,, it isn´t working for me. When I upload my JPEG file and crop it to the right size it says:

Sorry, an error occurred on our end.

We've been notified of the issue and are on the case.

    Return to the home page.

I am having the same problem, as per y reply right above your comment.
  • Giannii · 1 month ago
I have a developer working on it, for more updates visit: http://status.disqus.com Thanks for the heads up! =)
  • Ricky Jordan · 1 month ago
Very nice addition! It doesn't appear to propagate to the Widget Code though. I'm using it in Wordpress. Any idea on when we might get some updated Widget code to support this and your new "look"?

Great job with all the enhancements lately!

  • Steve Anderson · 1 month ago
Great feature, mine's working fine; http://yourthankyoucard.com.

If a person has an avatar with wordpress or Gravatar will Disqus pull that image in or do they need to have their image loaded in their Disqus account?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Could we have support for transparency in PNG avatars? My avatar isn't supposed to have a black background behind it.
  • Giannii · 1 month ago
    I have a developer on it. =)
  • Kirei · 1 month ago
Any news on supporting Wavatars? (Or something similar?) I really don't like a page of 15 commenters all having the same default avatar.. Makes it look ugly and hard on the eyes. Very hard to follow certain commenters.
  • Giannii · 1 month ago
This is something we're developing. =)

    Good.. I did it..
