The Disqus Blog: Disqus releases Beta 2 – New features, lots of bug fixes, improved performance

  • Phil Harnish · 1 year ago
I'm really impressed with how much development direction from users. Disqus is really shaping up to be the ultimate solution to comments.
  • Sahil Desai · 1 year ago
Not just comments, but I really see a global base for conversations on the web... i'll let you think about that but a convergence of everything that CAN HAS ARGUMENT seems great. unified solutions always win. it's late i probably won't be thinking this when i wake up later today :p
  • Luke Hoersten · 1 year ago
Sahil and I were just talking about how you don't even notice how much we rely on Disqus until we come to a blog without it.
  • Fashion Shop · 1 year ago
I like the idea where every actions stay within our own domain. UI is getting better.
  • Sahil Desai · 1 year ago
Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems you can only Edit a comment (if no one has replied) while you are at the community page for the site. Screenshot
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
No correction there. Editing will come to the blogs soon (still waiting to push it live).
  • preetam · 1 year ago
    hi guys,

i just emailed you about this but you just saved me many days of development time, and at least $5-$7K in development dollars, with what...10 lines of javascript code??

    Wow.

Please send me a list of your top 4 beers, and a mailing address: i'll send over some 24-packs.
  • kib2 · 1 year ago
Good work guys, Disqus really rocks !

The only thing I'm really missing yet is the possibility to use some markup language inside the comments, ie in reStructuredText. Is this possible in a near future ?

    Thanks for all.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We support basic HTML in the comments at the moment.
  • pjbrunet · 1 year ago
    How basic?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Well, you could do simple stuff like this or link to websites like pjbrunet.com by using HTML.
  • adapar · 1 year ago
Just read the latest post, congrats on the growth.

I have noticed two problems with markup. First, in the recent comment widget the markup is not rendered but shown as plain text and second, the very basic HTML markup does not seem to support "em" (in your comment above I see you used "i" instead).

    Thanks!
  • Adam Blinkinsop · 1 year ago
I'm a fan of markdown, myself. Either would be nice to have as an option, though.

Really liking the new look and features. Disqus is helping facilitate conversations on our blog that would have never happened with the default wordpress format.

    Keep it up!

Hmmm...and just now when I posted a pop-up appeared, something about "paramater updates". Not sure what that was about, had a bunch of fields, I just clicked update and it posted my comment. Really, I am replying to my own comment to see if it happens again.

  • Jim L · 1 year ago
An update on the previously mentioned pop-up. It said "Update extracted paramaters", and it appears to be related to coComment. With the extension enabled it brings up that pop-up, with the extension disabled it posts as normal. Just an FYI.

I'm liking the new features / updates. One thing I wish was different: the profile pop-up doesn't go away after mouse over unless you close it or click away.

    Thanks!

Wow, this all looks great. I've liked Disqus but the installation on my community site/aggregator (quakerquaker.org) just hasn't gotten the use I hoped it would. I think part of this is the confusion over all of the different pages. It looks like a lot of that clutter has been removed. I'll rework the site now and will probably add the recent comments--this could make a big difference in use.

Congrats on the Compete.com data. When I was choosing a commenting system to use, it came down to Disqus and IntenseDebate. I decided to use whichever system had the largest fanbase and was most likely to grow and I went to Complete and typed both URLs in. Even a few months ago the trends were clear and I went Disqus. With this new version I'm happier than ever with my choice. Now the test will be to see if I can get more happening on my site!

I've installed your widgets. Great idea, i'll support more and more in my sites.

there's a bug: on "recent posts" widget (single or combination) i can view even removed posts.

On http://www.civile.it/lettori/ i can see a message from ROBERTO Removed (see http://www.civile.it/news/visual.php?num=23310 where there isn't the message).

    Great work, bye

It seems the avatars are pretty low-res as well. I noticed that it does not show the display name, but the always shows the user's login (e.g. danielha).
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    You're right. Will fix, thanks
  • Jo Vermeulen · 1 year ago
You're welcome! Thanks for the nice work on the beta!

While I'm at it, I was also wondering if it would be possible in the future to be identified by other people (e.g. adding an avatar, or some more details, or linking different posters to the same poster)? Might be useful for the lazy commenters who don't feel like changing their profiles :-) Of course, these changes have to be approved by the person who posted (e.g. by sending them an email). Just a quick idea, it might have some undesirable consequences though.

I thought the first release was pretty cool, but there were some key features that kept me from really getting excited about it. Now it is so much better. I can see it still needs a little work but I can see this service taking over the comment system of many more blogs now.

OK, I'm feeling a bid dumb. I like the sound of this feature:

Manage threads from dashboard: Remove threads or just lock them so no new comments can be posted

But I can't for the life of me find out where or how to do this. Anyone got a suggestion for me?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
This was temporarily removed while we fix a major bug with it.

    It'll return shortly, very sorry!
  • jmaxf · 1 year ago
ah, so I'm not crazy. Good to know. I'm really looking forward to this feature (and the ability to turn off commenting per post as I post?).

Thanks for all the hard work!

    Hi there,

Did you use your original XML or Disqus-modified XML to upload to us?
  • Winace · 1 year ago
I tried to reintegrate to correct some issues with deleting comments and the admin menu. Disqus is now not working at all at my blog. Even worse, I overwrote the old template xml file. You can view my current one here http://www.channellines2.com/template-667919261...
    The blog site is http://www.chanellines.com
I'd really appreciate some quick help!

one of the things, i'd still love to see is support for trackbacks. Blogger is one of those (annoying) services, which doesn't do it as well as, for instance, Wordpress, and if Disqus were to integrate such a feature, say through technorati, it would kick A**.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
It's coming, I promise. We wanted to implement trackbacks in a better way than they currently are done.

as you can see by the anonomous post
    I can't log ---in
I go to discus log-in page , past three days now
and disqus log-in page doesn't look right---
It shows the word password twice--not one time like it's supposed to
    zstock
    I can log in on Firefox, but I can't log-in on IE7

    Thanks zstock,

We're fixing the Internet Explorer issues right now.

Not programmatically -- with the cookie set, I can view all comments in a "Moderation" view on JS-Kit's site, but it's Javascript-heavy.

    widgets and unapproved
I've installed your widget. There was a problem on removed posts, listed even if removed. Not it is solved.

today i've seen listed in your widget (under "recent") an unapproved post on a moderated forum.

Can you please check ? Thanks once more, great tool !
  • spataro · 1 year ago
sorry: "Not it is solved" it's an error. I would say: "Now it is solved".

    Help!
Love the idea and want to add Disqus to my blogging. I'm using blogger, with a .blogspot.com account, and can't figure out how to attach the subdomain you require on setup.

Call me a newbie, but please help!
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
What subdomain are you talking about?

So, I signed up for Disqus using my own, personal, OpenID, not from clickpass. Disqus.com says I'm logged in, but any disqus-using site, such as this one, doesn't know that I'm logged in. Checking the "Verify my post" option presents login options consisting only of username and password, no OpenID available. Since I never setup a password, I can't leave a comment anywhere using attached to my disqus profile.

Is this something you're working on, or do I not understand something.
