DISQUS

The Disqus Blog: DISQUS and Facebook Connect under the mistletoe

  • khylek · 1 year ago
A possibly stupid question, but how do I find my Facebook API key?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
If you do not already have a Facebook API key, the best way (right now) is to fill out a “Create Application” form and use http://disqus.com/ as the Callback URL.
  • Joe Dawson · 1 year ago
Hey Daniel, how do I create a trackback to this blog entry? I tried the URL and then also /trackback but my site didn't get referenced at the bottom. Thanks in advance for your response :)
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We have to manually approve these trackbacks. It should appear soon.
  • Noah David Simon · 1 year ago
    disqusandfacebookconnect is not easy
  • khylek · 1 year ago
I agree it ain't easy, and it'll be a while before I bother getting the API key setup. But IMO that's more on the Facebook side than it is on the DIsqus side. I sorta wish that the API Key would be handled similar to how FriendFeed does, which is to say, each user gets one, across the board. Instead of the goofy creating a dummy application thing.

Sounds great, I really like Disqus but was concerned Facebook Connect could impact its growth, now I have set my Facebook API look forward to the change.

I'm with khylek - how do I get the FB API key - do I need to 'add an application'? Can you offer us a step by step guide?
  • Alex · 1 year ago
I'm wondering the exact same thing.

  • Daniel J. Pritchett · 1 year ago
Great news! This cements my desire to keep DISQUS on my blog and it makes me much more interested in Facebook Connect now. Any word on some Google integration?
  • courane01 · 1 year ago
I am thrilled at the portability of user profiles across sites and systems. Streamlining is so helpful.

Do you need a seperate API key for every site you want to use?
  • Glenn Batuyong · 1 year ago
There is a lot of overlap going on... so do you really want to add three commenting systems on your website to capture feedback to cover all your bases?
  • Alex · 1 year ago
I'm wondering the exact same thing.
  • Joe Dawson · 1 year ago
Valid point Glenn, it does seem that way although I am sure if Google Friend Connect and Facebook Connect were to create sweet music we would be a step closer to a universal standard. I am happy with Disqus integrating with Facebook Connect as that is a definite plus for me as I have been trying - and failing - to implement this so happy days :)
  • greasyguide · 1 year ago
I just went to the developer app in Facebook and created a new application called Disqus. And then copied and pasted in the API key.
  • Andrew B. · 1 year ago
Yes, for now. We are working with Facebook to come up with more convenient options in the future.
  • Chris Charabaruk · 1 year ago
It's all good to be adding this, but until Facebook starts handing out API keys without requiring an application to go with it, there's no point to it for any of us.

Website owners add these API keys. As a commenter, you just need to be logged into Facebook.

Right, but as an owner, how do we obtain a key?

Disqus, FriendFeed, IntenseDebate... Now Facebook Connect and Google ...where's the universal integration?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We're hoping that this will pave the way for more compatible profiles across the web. Disqus has always been about building better communities through our discussion software, but we do not aim to create a closed profile community behind our walls.

You'll be seeing more along these lines from us after the new year.
  • Joe Dawson · 1 year ago
Great work Daniel and the team, looking forward to 2009 :)

They will be making the retrieving of keys much more simplified (and applicable for this use case) but in the mean time, you can just use your website as your application to get the key.

What is the value of this besides a few less clicks which hopefully lead to more commenters?
Will my Disqus comments and/or other comments on my blogs show up On Facebook?

Much as I like Disqus on my smaller blog, for my primary one I'm sticking with Wordpress plugins. I get zero new traffic due to using Disqus, which is what bloggers like me really care about, right? If I write great posts, people will comment. People don't comment just because it's easier, do they? Is this proven anywhere? In fact, I would argue that having more flame commenters is going to take away from my community.

Glad to see the FB feature none the less.

    Hi Daniel.

I followed the instructions left below by Joe Dawson. His instructions stated that the callback url be the homepage of your blog. So I put my callback url as http://randythomas.org ...

Will that be a problem when you flip the switch to go live with this feature? ... I plugged in both the api and the secret keys.

Randy - is it working for you? My understanding is that you put the disqus URL, as it's Disqus that Facebook Connect is interacting with, even though it's on your site...
  • Randy · 1 year ago
It hasn't been working for me. However, I just changed the facebook app to have the disqus url as the call back URL. Has Disqus turned that feature on for everyone yet?

My facebook comments are not getting published back to facebook. My key is correct and other methods have worked for me. Specifically jwarlok works well and is disabled as I try to get this working.

Thanks, I may have resolved it. It seems to be working now, though maybe a a bit inconsistent. Some comments don't seem to get posted. should I notice a delay?

I'm using a joomla plugin, as well as code integrated in my template. so far so good.

Was completely thrown at the beginning about whether to have separate moderator accounts for different sites since we use gravatars and wpmu icons, NOW with another avatar in disqus I'd like some direction. My clients rely on me to make this work BUT the real question is, if they don't want to moderate their own blog, it will be I that shows up in their stead. hmmmm any thought on having interchangeable/multiple identities??? myOpenid does provide some level of the functionality I'm speaking to. Stressed? me?

And, fb on two sites in two days and have my logo on my app page in facebook. and it shows in my facebook stream, like that for my own blog. Also did the Twiiter login same as use here so my sites commenting system exactly replicates Disqus except for seesmic so far . . . I'm integrating two flash components for my clients which provides self branding media delivery using slideshowpro for ad banners and stable media delivery.
  • Giannii · 6 months ago
Your clients can add you as a moderator on their sites here:
http://disqus.com/admin/permissions/ or you can be the moderator owner
of all the sites and add your clients as moderators. We also use
gravatars with our accounts as well.

Can you elaborate on the second paragraph of your question?

for some reasons on my blog after sending the comment it doesn't show my avatar or name, but only my facebook id: "facebook-548977257" i am connected and also i can send my comment to publish on my facebook wall, no problem.
i only miss my name & foto in the comment. any idea what could be the problem?
thanks! anyway, it´s a great tool!!

You are right Facebook Connect is really an awesome plugin. Nice efforts.
  • Defcon5 · 5 months ago
Will there be integration with the pages feature of Facebook, so many apps seem to neglect that aspect.

For myself I have a facebook profile, and then a facebook page for my company/blog. Everything wants to try and put itself under my profile, and I really don't want that.

Everyone will be able to have Facebook Connect integrated with Disqus. This is really very good to hear about. If account-linking and friend-finding will also be added as its feature, it would really going to be rocking.
