The Disqus Blog: Disqus 2.0 WordPress plugin broken?

  • xxdesmus · 1 year ago
I have the exact same problem. When I click on the "What does this mean?" link in the error message it just takes me to a 404 message on the Disqus website.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Thanks for pointing this out. To configure the plugin, click Comments and then Disqus in the WP-Admin.

We are updating the message so it is more helpful.
  • Fortes · 1 year ago
I tried that, but it does not work. I'm getting incomplete pages, no UI ever shows up.
  • Andrew Meyer · 1 year ago
Daniel, going to Comments, Settings, and Plugins all return the same "...Legacy mode...What does this mean?" message and clicks-through to error message.
  • KnightKnetwork · 1 year ago
Same problem, comments will not load because nothing loads after the legacy message
  • Jonathan · 1 year ago
same problem here... i had to delete it from my directory to get it working again
  • nitinbadjatia · 1 year ago
I'm getting the same 'Disqus is in legacy mode" right after installing and Activating the plugin. I didn't have the legacy plugin installed. WP won't render the rest of the page as well.
  • frumpa · 1 year ago
Having similar problems with 2.0 on a system that had 1.0. When I click on Comments, as Daniel Ha suggested, I can't get to Disqus because of this error:

    http://twitpic.com/7gsi

    I haven't modified any files.

    ** Update:

The "Cannot load disqus." error is because I deactivated the plugin via renaming the directory. After I reactivate it, I'm still stuck at the legacy message on all Plugin screens.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Also make sure you've installed the plugin in the correct directory

/wp-content/plugins/disqus/ should be the directory containing the files.
  • frumpa · 1 year ago
Looks like the correct directory to me:

    http://twitpic.com/7grx
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
hmm I too got the legacy mode thing though it has disappeared.. clicking that link also gave a 404 error.

I tried exporting comments to disqus only to have it error out - how can I find out why it gave an error?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We're taking a look right now.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
The link to the Comments page directly is <your blog>/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?page=disqus
  • nateritter · 1 year ago
Hey guys, the WP plugin (or app in general) needs a way to go back to text commenting if you didn't have a Seesmic account (or just changed your mind). Needs updating to fix that usability issue.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Can someone paste their error log here?
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
It's not an error log issue, it's the plugin somehow not letting anything else run when it displays it's Legacy warning.
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
where do i get it from?
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
You can get it from your web directory under /logs.
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
no luck - nothing in the logs folder.. happy to run debug versions or something to figure it out..
  • Dave Zatz · 1 year ago
my directory was fine and i was seeing the dashboard ui, but it states 'legacy mode' and existing WP-produced comments were not visible. i've disabled the plugin for the time being
  • Chris Nixon · 1 year ago
Just to add I'm having exactly the same problem. Gone back to 1.04 for now.
  • thepete · 1 year ago
I'm using the 2.0 plugin on my 2.5 install of WP and when the plugin is activated it shows no comments at all. The old plugin worked fine. Might this be a 2.6 vs 2.5 issue? Or might it be about my WP install not being in the root directory on my server? Going to try and downgrade back to the old plugin. If that fails I'll just go back to WP comments.
  • KnightKnetwork · 1 year ago
I'm installed in a /wordpress directory, could this be the issue? I noticed the comment.php is using 'siteurl' in get options, and you may want to use 'home'. I made the change, but it didn't seem to correct my problem

*I haven't looked over everything so this may not be a needed change, just something i've run across before.
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
    nothing in the logs folder..
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
to be clear - there is a logs folder but nothing in there for august - there is one for july but the last entry is july 31st
  • 3rdmartini · 1 year ago
I installed the new plugin on a 2.6 installation and also got the legacy mode error. Nothing will make it go away.
  • Scott Beale · 1 year ago
I installed the plugin and with the next post it reverted back to the old comment form. Also some comments are showing up and others are not.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Hi Scott, did you initiate the import process? We didn't see any errors coming from your account.
  • Scott Beale · 1 year ago
[sorry for the double comment, the first one was not a direct reply]

How do you initiate the import process? I just installed the plugin and then entered my Disqus username and password.

Here's the first post after upgrading the plugin:

    http://laughingsquid.com/after-burner-playa-fue...
  • Scott Beale · 1 year ago
Also comment #1173255 on that post did not show up. It's on Disqus, but not the blog post.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Under Comments > Disqus in the WP-admin.

Click Install, enter your login and proceed. Did this work without error?
  • Scott Beale · 1 year ago
It didn't give me any errors when I originally did it, only the problems that I mentioned in this thread. I've uninstalled it and then re-installed it, so let see if that works.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
You can also sync up your WP comments by going to Advanced Options > Export to Disqus
  • Scott Beale · 1 year ago
Oh, I thought he syncing was automatic. Do you have to manually do it via the export feature?
  • Scott Beale · 1 year ago
Yikes, that was a mess. I tried doing the export and it totally crashed Firefox.

I guest I'll just see what happens with the next blog post.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
It automatically backs up, but you need to choose to do it the first time.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
I'm happy you are helping him with his import stuff, but about 99% of us can't even access our admin area :)
  • thepete · 1 year ago
I'm with Mike, though I can get to my admin area. Instead, Disqus 2.0 removes my comments entirely--no comments or field to enter them. Each post ends right before they'd normally show up. I've swapped back to the previous plugin, but it seems odd to have all this hubub about a new plugin when clearly it still has some issues.

Also, my problems *began* after I hit the "export" button.
  • 3rdmartini · 1 year ago
Looking through the plugin code, I'm wondering where the arguments in this function are defined. If they're not defined, it would certainly throw the exception in the warning function that would yield our problem.

    function dsq_legacy_mode() {
    return get_option('disqus_forum_url') && !get_option('disqus_api_key');
    }
  • KnightKnetwork · 1 year ago
Getting the legacy error on a 2.6 in a /wordpress folder and a 2.5 installed to the root. Hosted on Godaddy shared. No HTML is rendered after the legacy error message for the wordpress admin. Happy to run debug versions but i'm out for a few hours.
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
Do you have any error logs for today?
  • KnightKnetwork · 1 year ago
    Not that I can find
  • Ross_Jett · 1 year ago
When I go to Comments in the Wordpress Admin Panel, I see the message, "You must configure the plugin to enable the DISQUS comment system." When I click on "configure the plugin," I am taken to mysite/wordpress/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?page=disqus. Disqus does not show up on my blog though and each time I return to the admin panel, I get the same "You must configure the plugin to enable the DISQUS comment system" message. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?
  • Jason · 1 year ago
Are you seeing the same issue as everyone else where the rest of the page does not load after the message?
  • Ross_Jett · 1 year ago
If you mean that mysite/wordpress/wp-admin/edit-comments.php?page=disqus is blank with the exception of the toolbar at the top, then yes. Clicking on any of the links in the toolbar (Write, Manage, Design, Comments) takes me back to the same message about configuring Disqus. Btw, I am running WP 2.52.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Yes, I can't get anywhere else but to the "legacy" warning...
  • Jason · 1 year ago
Can someone email me a link to their phpinfo? You can create the PHP file with the following:

    <?php phpinfo(); ?>

    My email is jason@disqus.com. Thanks.
  • alx · 1 year ago
    Sent :)
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
getting the legacy error on WP 2.6 too. I had the previous version of the plugin installed (1.0.4 ?)

Can't configure the plugin since it screws up the admin of wordpress
  • James · 1 year ago
    Daniel,
I am getting WP Database errors. I am running WP 2.6 with the new plugin. The plugin seems to be running correctly once I configured it but all posts now show the DB errors above the comment section:

    http://blog.vivisectingmedia.com/2008/07/vivmed...
  • Jason · 1 year ago
    Hey James,

Looks like an issue with the plugin if you've changed the database prefix from the default "wp_". We'll let you know when it is fixed.
  • James · 1 year ago
    cool... Thanks!
  • Jason · 1 year ago
I've updated the plugin (you can re-download it here: http://media.disqus.com/disqus-wordpress-2.0.zip). This version should fix the issue you are seeing. Let me know if you are still seeing issues.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Having the same issue as everyone else...can't get out of this legacy mode.
  • Chris Lentz · 1 year ago
I am also having the same issue. I hope you all get it up and working soon!
  • Morten Josefsen · 1 year ago
So, I got the same problem as everyone else. Upgraded to Disqus 2.0 on WP 2.6, and all I get is 'DISQUS is running in legacy mode. (What does this mean?)' in the WP admin pages. Nothing else loaded on the page after this, no matter what I click (Write, Manage, Design, Comments, Settings etc.).

Hope you manage to fix this, and thanks for a great service.
  • Gaurav · 1 year ago
Works fine for me. I added my username/pwd in the Comment > DISQUS and following the 3-4 step wizard. Old comments on Disqus synced up with my posts.

I am having problem exporting my comments from WP to DISQUS. I have more than 700 comments in WP, but DISQUS only shows 44 after the export. I re-exported the comments, but get the same result.
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
Hmmm crap this scares me : I have 32 365 comments at the time we "speak" :-D This gonna be the hell of a long process to sync with Disqus :-D

(though at the moment I can't even config the plugin)
  • Gaurav · 1 year ago
Good thing about the export is that it puts the export in a queue. Most likely to balance load on Disqus' servers. I don't know if it also queues up comments on the local server as well.
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
oh brilliant then , I hope it will work when the plugin is fixed (at the moment i'm stuck with a "config disqus" message that wont go away ... when I click on it there is nothing more that appears)
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
Well, I went back to 1.04...can only go so long without my admin interface :)
  • Jason · 1 year ago
We believe we have found the root cause of the issue. If you are using PHP4, we should have a fixed version for you shortly.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
    How will you notify us?
  • Jason · 1 year ago
I will update this thread and email everyone who has been having an issue. We are currently testing the fix.
  • tomwatson · 1 year ago
Please include me - i have the same problem - have been essentially locked out of admin by it.
  • Jason · 1 year ago
Hi Tom, the fix is available. You can grab the latest version from: http://media.disqus.com/disqus-wordpress-2.0.zip.
  • Chris Lentz · 1 year ago
Good to hear you figured it out. Thanks for the quick fix! I look forward to exploring it and blogging about it.
  • Chris Nixon · 1 year ago
Everything seems to be working perfectly now. Thanks very much for your help and quick response on this. The fact that there has been a problem, and that it was fixed so quickly gives me even more confidence in the platform. Well done guys!
  • Jason · 1 year ago
I have updated the plugin. You may redownload it from http://media.disqus.com/disqus-wordpress-2.0.zip. Please reply to this post if you are still having an issue.
  • alx · 1 year ago
    Working well, thanks!
  • nitinbadjatia · 1 year ago
Working now! Thanks for the fast fix
  • nitinbadjatia · 1 year ago
Oops, now getting an import error.
  • Jason · 1 year ago
We are aware of the issues with importing. We're working on a fix from our side so you won't have to do anything to get it to work.
  • santhonys · 1 year ago
Thanks Jason and Daniel... it was fun to watch the live-action troubleshooting.
  • Chris Lentz · 1 year ago
It worked for me also! Thanks for the quick fix.
  • onlypencil · 1 year ago
im getting this error when trying to export, it says its done exporting but i don't see the comments anywhere on disqus. I also get an error on the export.php page, something with 'unlink'
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
    thanks for the fix ;-)

    Now I have a new issue ^^

When you set "Use DISQUS on" to "Only futur posts and existing posts without comments" , it lets you comment one time. But when the next user wants to come back, since comments are synchronized with WordPress, it surely acts like "oh this post has a comment, lets turn off Disqus" ... so the next comment will be added through the former comment system.
  • Chris Sivori · 1 year ago
I am getting the same issue.
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
Oh and check your RSS feed, here mine is gone wild :-d I dunno if its connected though
  • Jason · 1 year ago
The new plugin is designed to work with the option to replace all comments. The option is left for users who are still running in legacy mode.
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
Using the "replace all comments" option does .... remove my previous posts' comments which is pretty annoying so to say

I tried it .This post has 54 comments ( http://blog.gonzaguedambricourt.com/2008/08/09/... ) and when I use this option it reads "0 comments"

    pretty annoying :-)
  • Jason · 1 year ago
You can use the export feature in the plugin to get all these comments
in Disqus. If you are having an issue with the export working, we'll
have a fix for it soon which will not require any interaction from
    you.
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
at the moment I have a total of 32 388 comments on my blog , when I click on export, it loads and then ends with a white WP Admin page (I just have the links displayed but no content)

I guess the next export version will help :-)
  • Chris Sivori · 1 year ago
I am also experiencing export to Disqus issues. If I enable Disqus, existing comments are not viewable. Same as Mr. Dambricourt.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
I had a big issue as well
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
Ok I can confirm the issue : when the plugin is enabled, my RSS feed becomes unreadable (it is refused by feedburner, by safari etc)

When I disable it , it works back instantly
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    We'll look into that.
  • Gonzague Dambricourt · 1 year ago
    merci ;-)
  • Olivier · 1 year ago
What i've found is that in disqus.php you can change the line 217:

    } else if ( (is_single() || is_page() || $withcomments) ) {

    by

    } else if ( (is_feed() || is_single() || is_page() || $withcomments) ) {

The problem is only that disqus insert some javascript at the end of the feed, which lead to invalid feed (and break feedburner)
Disqus should not try to insert anything in the feed ;-)
  • frumpa · 1 year ago
The updated v2 (PHP 4 friendly) works for me, too. Thanks.
  • xxdesmus · 1 year ago
All fixed now when I installed the v2 (PHP4) update. Thank you :)
  • Bob Finch · 1 year ago

  • dsgoldring · 1 year ago
Unable to export comments from wordpress to disqus as well -
  • Morten Josefsen · 1 year ago
Seems to be working fine here. Thx again for a great service.
  • Phil Glockner · 1 year ago
The Disqus plugin installed smoothly for me, but something bad is happening when it tries to sync the comments with wordpress. I am getting massive duplication of comments in Wordpress. At last count, Disqus says I have 487 comments, and WordPress Dashboard now says I have 2,755 comments.

When I look at the comments in WordPress, each one is duplicated 5, 6 or more times. And it has been growing constantly since I installed the plugin yesterday.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
    That's gotta suck man :(
  • Phil Glockner · 1 year ago
Up to over 4,000 comments in the dashboard. I'm going to have to switch back to the older plugin if this keeps up.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
    Good lord!
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
We really regret not picking up this bug before releasing the plugin, but we've located the problem and are fixing it at the moment.

If this is a huge issue at the moment, you may want to jump back onto the old plugin until the fix is pushed live. Sorry, Phil.
  • Phil Glockner · 1 year ago
Thanks Daniel, I sent in an email and got a good reply from Jason, I think the situation is under control, and you guys have promised to help resolve the issue soon, so that's good enough for me!
  • Dhananjay Nene · 1 year ago
I have a duplication problem with comments too
  • Phil Glockner · 1 year ago
the advice I got was to download the very latest version of the 2.0 plugin to stop the duplication issue from continuing, and a fix for existing dupes is in the works.

    http://blog.disqus.net/2008/08/13/notes-about-t...
  • Riaz Kanani · 1 year ago
I have the reverse <grins> - disqus shows only some of my comments not all.. even though it seemed to export successfully :(
  • Anthony Citrano · 1 year ago
Looks like this is affecting a lot of us. I started a conversation over on FriendFeed that has my specifics:

    http://friendfeed.com/e/69b7e0bc-7090-2226-7870...

But basically I don't get an error message - just a blank frame - I can see my legacy comments AND DISQUS comments in the legacy comment manager, but in the DISQUS comment manager I only see DISQUS comments. On the actual web pages, all legacy comments are missing (i.e. not displayed by the plugin.)

At this point I do not appear to have any duplication.
  • Jonathan Bailey · 1 year ago
I am having an issue where my "Advanced Options" and "Manage" links are not clickable. They are just gray text. Am I missing something?
  • Bob Caswell · 1 year ago
I had this problem at one point too. Make sure your plugin is installed in the directory "disqus" and not some other directory. (I put mine in "disqus new.") Also, try Ctrl+Shift+R in Firefox for a forced refresh.
  • Jonathan Bailey · 1 year ago
That actually did the trick. I named it "disqus3" to avoid overwriting my previous plugins. It works now, just can't import anything...

Thank you very much for your help!
  • Bob Caswell · 1 year ago
Yeah, I did the same thing initially too. About import/export, I'm
having all sorts of issues. I think they'll be releasing some news on
that front soon... (at least I hope so!)
  • Jonathan Bailey · 1 year ago
I'll keep my fingers crossed right beside you!
  • Anthony Citrano · 1 year ago
It looks like the updated "fixed" version from this morning will at least run the export process. But it's full of problems, such as:

    - comments that I had marked as "unapproved" or "unpublished" within WordPress are now "approved" and published on DISQUS - sometimes on the wrong blog entry - and in all their unvarnished, ugly, XML form.

    - some of my blog entries and comments from other entries have been merged into unrelated entries. It's very, very ugly.

    - some of the entries that had dozens of comments now sport exactly 0.

Sheesh, guys, I feel like I'm participating in a beta program.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
This definitely wasn't ready for wide-release
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Hi Anthony,

The vast majority of blogs doing the import process did so successfully. The first release of the 2.0 plugin did have cause some issues for a number of people. We are constantly pushing fixes to the plugin zip, but it is not yet a final release. When we finalized the fixes, it will be 2.01.

This may sound like a broken record, but I just wanted to let you know we're still paying close attention.
  • Anthony Citrano · 1 year ago
Thanks, Daniel - and also thanks for your and your team's quick responses to me via e-mail. Looking forward to giving 2.0.1 a shot.
  • Chris Baskind · 1 year ago
After seeing the pain some of you have gone through, I'll wait before upgrading more of my sites. But I blundered through the conversion on one of them yesterday. It's WP 2.6. Took a while to see the WP comments turn up for moderation at Disqus, but they did and are formatted properly. Disqus comments are now also in WP. Comments seem to match the articles.

I have a minor problem: comment counts are no longer updating on the homepage (they're fine elsewhere). I'll dig at that later.
  • Frank · 1 year ago
Hi, I would love it if the "Add New Comment" box was at the bottom, like this. I'm using a WP 2.6 installation. Even though I did my configuration and saved it several times, the comment box comes on the top. Any ideas would be appreciated.
  • Mike Olbinski · 1 year ago
It's a bug, because you are using the API, they are working on it I guess...I'm in the same boat :(
  • Frank · 1 year ago
Thanks, Mike. I was hoping that it was something they're working on. It's a bit of a headache now.
  • Gaurav · 1 year ago
Just realized that the export script not just simply exports the comments to DISQUS, but also update the User Agent of the comment. Just so that Disqus can run 'SELECT * FROM wp_comments WHERE comment_agent NOT LIKE 'Disqus/%';'

I don't think that is the best implementation. IMO, Disqus should not be changing the user agent of the comments, at least not without showing an alert. They should 'select * from wp_comments' upload it to Disqus and then de-dupe the comments based on a key that contains site_id, post_id, comment_id.

This will increase an overhead on Disqus' servers (say Techcrunch was to export their comments) but it makes sure that the data on the wp's server is not altered by an 'export' script.

Edit: I might be wrong here. It seems like some comments got duplicated. The duplicate comments have the comment_agent as 'disqus/*'
  • eco2oh · 1 year ago
Can I start by saying DISQUS and it's integration with seesmic is the coolest thing to happen in blogging in the last 2 years. Is anyone having with video comments (seesmic) freezing in the "please wait while seesmic is completing the post" comment phase.

I had DISQUS 1.3 working just fine with WP 2.5 but since ugrading both I can't get video comments to work. They are recorded on seesmic and I see them in my seesmic sent box but the blog freezes and the comment don't appear on my DISQUS community or admin pages. Is this a folder permissions issue? If so which folders? or is it an integration issues?

I think the number of comments here reflects how much people what this application to work. I know I think it is essential for the evolution of blogging. Cheers Dean
  • Daniel Ha · 1 year ago
    Hi Dean,

There wasn't anything changed in the new update that would affect the
way video comments work, though I do seem to be having issues with it
as well. I'll reach out to the Seesmic team to see if they can help.

I am trying to install the disqus plugin with worpress 2.5 - plugin version 2.03.3166 - I get an "unexpected error" when i enter my user/pass on the "Install DISQUS" screen.
