The Battle for the Homepage: How Publishers Are Using Community to Win Back Control in the Age of Zero-Click

It’s one of the few things left that gives AI systems actual confidence about meaning.

Think about it: Generative search isn't just asking “what page is relevant.” It’s asking “what source feels alive and worth anchoring a summary to?” A static article gets summarized and discarded. A page with active comments, disagreement, and visible momentum is harder to treat as disposable data.

From what I’m seeing, that mix of discussion density + recency acts like a soft trust signal. Not necessarily a ranking factor, but definitely a retrieval signal.

So yeah, building a destination matters. But long term, community does something subtler: it stabilizes context in a world where AI is constantly trying to compress everything into a snippet.

Re:

Too many take things at face value.
How many spot that small print at the bottom of Google's AI overview "AI responses may include mistakes"?

And I do think it is wrong that it can often quote large chunks verbatim from a site without acknowledging the source of that information.

But back to the issue at hand, I never gave up on the "traditional" means of keeping a community together, such as email, although some people are reluctant to enter their email addresses in forms, which I do understand.

And otherwise, as far as keeping an online community together, the personal touch helps there as well. You can't beat real people meeting and greeting and making you feel valued, that you are indeed part of a community and not just clicks and data.
Generally, the same things work online as in real life, but it's just that people can be more easily duped online as they are seeing what others want to show them, not necessarily what is true.
And if you only look at an AI summary of opinions, you may not be getting the whole picture!

Re:
