The Disqus Blog: Block comments by RegEx and site URL

  • Giannii · 5 months ago
Currently, the only way to block a user is by using the blacklisting. You
can add them by username, ip, or email.

Yes, we are aware that currently, the only way to block a user is by blacklisting. That's why is was brought to your attention.

Blacklisting doesn't work for sh*t because spammers are smart enough to:

    1. Create new profiles to spam with and

    2. Use URL shorteners (e.g. TinyUrl) to mask their spamvertized websites.

Have you blacklisted by ip? Also you can set your "who can comment"
    level higher here: http://disqus.com/admin/permissions

Forward me a couple of those notifications and I can take a deeper look.

I'm not the admin, but they are reporting the spammer is spoofing IP's

    Hi Giannii,

    Here's a good example

    http://xtrends.blogspot.com/2009/07/bull-train....

This guy supposedly spoofs IPs, then masks his website using a url shortner.

If Disqus allowed banning a post that contained a specific URL or phrase this would solve this problem

E.g. in this instance, banning http://lin.cr would eliminate the spammer in this example from masking his URL with that particular shortening service.

It would also be a nice feature to allow moderators to ban foul language (could be helpful if for instance you had a site which had a lot of young kids on it).
